SECOND HALF SURGE LIFTS CARDINALS PAST LIONS, 4-1

COMMERCE, Texas – Incarnate Word took control in the second and was able to score three times in half to power past the Lions, 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Lion Soccer Field. Sarah Parker tallied two and Katie Miller added another to put give the Cardinals the victory.

With the loss A&M-Commerce has fallen in three straight games, bringing their record to 2-5 and 1-3 in Lone Star Conference Play. The victory moves the Cardinals to 2-4 overall and back to .500 in conference play with a 2-2 mark.

Incarnate Word did not waste much time in getting on the board when Jordyn Garcia put her name in the scorebook with a shot inside the 18-yard box after a spin mover to get around the Lion defender. In the 30th minute the Lions were able to tie the score when Anitra Wright connected on shot from inside the 18-yard box and beat the Cardinals keeper, Heather Kowalik, the assist was provided by Eva Brutto. The goal was Wright's third of the season. The Lions were able to control the ensuing minutes after the goal with good midfield pressure but were unable to show anything for it on the scoreboard.

In the second 45 minutes Incarnate Word was able to control the pace of play early with four shots in the first 10 minutes. In the 56th minute the pressure as rewarded when Sarah Parker headed in a feed off a corner kick from Katie Miller to get the Cardinals the lead for good.

The Lions had chances in the form of two corner kicks and three shots but were again unable to put anything past Kowalik in net. In the 74th minute, after a Incarnate Word corner, Parker put in her second of the game off a scramble at the top of the box and past Lion keeper Tracey Rogers. Less than 10 minutes later the Cardinals added another goal as Katie Miller put in a feed from Amanda Watkins to push the lead to 4-1.

The Lions return to the pitch on Friday September 28 with a match against the Mustangs of Midwestern State at 7 pm.
