COMMERCE, Texas -- Cadie and Callie Annett proved that things do come better in pairs when Cadie got a feed from her twin sister, Callie, and fired a shot past Pioneer goalkeeper, Lindsey Sisco, for the game winner in the first over time period.
The Lions didn't waste anytime to get the fireworks going when freshmen forward Anitra Wright connected on a shot after she gained controlled of the ball around the center circle and shot from outside the box and beating Sisco to the right post just over two minutes into the game. The goal was the fourth for Wright on the season. Over the next 18 minutes each team traded chances but it was A&M-Commerce striking again in the 21st minute when Traeyn Blanton connected on a shot off a feed from Eva Brutto and Brionna Minde, that went of the post and then of Sisco into the back of the net to make it 2-0 Lions.
However the Pioneers would not go away. Just about three minutes later Taylor Maxson flicked in a header off a throw in by Haleigh Wanzer. Maxson's header trickled through the legs of Lions goalkeeper Tracey Rogers and over the goal line. That cut the Lions lead in half, 2-1. Each team traded chances with both teams having shots go wide in the closing 20 minutes of the half.
Texas Woman's controlled the ball for the opening 10 minutes of the second half and soon put the ball in the back of the net. The goal came courtesy of Brittany Martin, her ninth of the season, off feed from Sara Deeb that beat Rogers to the left post at the 55th minute. Over the next 35 minutes each team had multiple opportunities to push into the lead but both sides were unable to breakthrough. Each team had multiple corner kicks, which led to headers and shots, but all shots were blocked, saved or wide.
After the regulation time was not enough to settle this tilt the first overtime began with the Lions gaining a corner just over two minutes. Wright took the corner from the left corner. The ensuing corner led to a scrum at the far post when Callie Annett got control of the ball inside the 18 yard box and found her sister Cadie at the top of the box and Cadie deposited the ball past Sisco.
The A&M-Commerce Lions return to action this Friday October 5 when they travel to San Antonio, Texas. The Lions will next take the pitch at home on Friday October 12 against Eastern New Mexico at 7:30 p.m.
