Wichita Falls, Texas – Back-to-Back goals early in the second half push Midwestern State past the Lions 3-0 in Wichita Falls.
A&M-Commerce got a corner kick in the fifth minute and Anitra Wright played a ball to the right post but Syndey Lawthers was unable to connect on a header. Less than ten minutes later Brionna Minde played a corner to the far left post but Lawthers had her shot blocked that led to a third Lions corner. Wright played the ensuing corner over the net.
Midwestern State came back with a chance by Mickey Brown but Tracey Rogers turned her away to keep the score tied at zero. Off a Midwestern corner Haley Crandall had a shot blocked by the Lion defense. After a yellow card was given to Brionna Minde the Mustangs came down and Rogers saved a shot by Stevie Harris. Two minutes late the Lions had another corner but were unable to get a shot on goal. The best scoring chance for either side came in the 41st minute when Wright hit the right post with a shot.
At the end of the first half Head Coach Neil Piper received a yellow card when he questioned the officials about calls in the first half.
Like in the first half, A&M-Commerce had the first opportunity when Wright pushed a shot wide left just two minutes into the half. In the 53rd minute Haley Crandall capitalized on a miss play by the Lion defense at the top of the box and beat Rogers to her left. Less than ten minutes later Mickey Brown scored off her own rebound to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
After chances by both Annett sisters the Mustangs countered when Hannah Staley connected with Payton Fookes on a goal that beat Rogers when she came out to challenge Fookes at the top of the box. The goal gave the Mustangs a 3-0 lead. Fookes now has four goals on the season.
Callie Annett had a penalty kick opportunity to cut into the lead but was turned away by Mallory Whitworth. The Lions got one more opportunity to get on the board when Julie Hernandez got her shot blocked in the 87th minute.
The Lions return to action on when they travel to Denton, Texas to take on Texas Woman's to close out the 2012 season on Friday night. Game time in Denton is set for 7:30 p.m.
