DENTON, Texas – Sparked by solid showings by the field athletes and the relay teams, A&M-Commerce closed out competition at the 2012 North Texas Mean Green Spring Invitational at Fouts Field.
All six of A&M-Commerce's top-10 showings on the afternoon came in the field events, led by the Lion long jumpers which placed three among the top finishers. Whitney Hargraves recorded a jump of 5.60 meters, her second-longest leap of the season en route to a third-place showing in Denton. She was joined in the top-10 by teammates Tierra Hill (5.39 meters) and Breana Anderson-Burton (5.38 meters), placing eighth and ninth respectively.
Over in the throws, Ashley Ross posted an A&M-Commerce career-best in the discus, recording a throw of 46.42 meters, provisionally qualifying for nationals in May. She also placed 10 th in the shot put at 10.95 meters, five spots back of teammate Abigail Leaupepe-Tele who placed fifth with a 12.10 meter showing.
The A&M-Commerce relay teams also had strong showings on the Fouts Field track, especially the 4x100 meter relay team which place second with a time of 47.24, just shy of its 47.00 showing last weekend. The 4x400 meter relay team was also strong, finishing third with a 3:56.77 showing.
A pair of season-best marks also fell this afternoon as Tyler Cottingham recorded a time of 59.49 in the 400 meter dash, besting the previous season-low time of 59.70 set at the Bobby Lane Invitational. In the distance events, Brooke Farris set a team low mark in the 800 meter run, compiling a time of 2:32.14 and shaving a full seven seconds off the previous season-low, also set at the Bobby Lane Invitational.
The season enters the home stretch as the Lions return to the track this coming Friday, heading over to Tyler to compete in the UT-Tyler Marc Randle Classic on Friday, April 13. Full results will be posted as they become available at LionAthletics.com.
