WACO, Texas -- A handful of Lions competed at the 2012 Michael Johnson Dr. Pepper Classic at the Hart-Patterson Track Complex on the campus of Baylor University. Four A&M-Commerce athletes finished among the top-10 in three separate events, competing against some of the best athletes in the region.
The afternoon was highlighted by an eighth-place finish by both Breana Anderson-Burton and Ashley Ross. Anderson-Burton notched a distance of 11.52 meters, the second-longest leap of the season for the Lions, while Whitney Hargraves placed 10th with a jump of 11.34 meters
In the throws, Ross posted a discus throw of 41.09 meters while also placed 10th in the hammer throw with a mark of 40.14 meters. Abigail Leaupepe-Tele just missed top-10 finishes of her own, placing 11th in the discus (39.34 meters) and 14th in the shot put (11.86 meters).
The only running event the Lion women competed in Saturday was the 400 meter dash, led by Brooke Odom's 19th-place finish which netted an A&M-Commerce season-low time of 59.29. She finished just ahead of Tyler Cottingham's 1:00.74.
Up next for A&M-Commerce is the final tune-up meet before the Lone Star Conference Championships as the Lions head to San Marcos for the Texas State Invitational on Saturday, April 28. Following that meet, A&M-Commerce hits the track at Memorial Stadium, serving as the host institution for the 2012 LSC Championships May 3-5 in Commerce.
