SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- A&M-Commerce closed out the 2012 regular season with a trip to San Antonio, competing in the Incarnate Word Last Chance Meet at Benson Stadium. A handful of Lions competed as each placed among the top five in their respective events.
Sophomore Vanessa Jackson highlighted the sprints for the Lions, placing first in the 200 meter dash with a mark of 25.63. Brooke Odom (59.74) and Tyler Cottingham (59.94) finished third and fourth in the 400 meter dash, finishing just two-tenths of a second apart of each other.
Jackson and Odom also teamed up with Ethel Ajanga and Aysha Moultrie in helping the 4x400 relay team to a second-place finish with a 4:10.20 showing.
In the field events, Abigail Leaupepe-Tele followed up her Lone Star Conference title from last week by finishing first in the discus with a mark of 43.73 meters, just ahead of teammate Ashley Ross who placed second with a throw of 43.64 meters. Whitney Hargraves continued to be solid in the jumps, placing second in the triple jump (11.53 meters) and third in the long jump (5.85).
Hargraves, Leaupepe-Tele and Ross each reached provisional qualifying marks in the meet, but each of their respective marks fell short of their season-bests.
A&M-Commerce now awaits to see which of its athletes will be invited to the 2012 NCAA Division II National Championships, held this season in Pueblo, Colo. May 24-27. A&M-Commerce will be looking to build on last year's performance which saw a pair of Lions finish in the top-10 of their respective events.
