2012 A&M-COMMERCE WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD SEASON RECAP

Opening Lap
The 2012 A&M-Commerce women's track and field season wrapped up with a number of impressive performance by head coach Sara Davis' squad. The Lions closed out the year with 85 top-five showings on the year and 17 first-place finishes, highlighted by a pair of All-Lone Star Conference selections, an LSC champion and a pair of NCAA Division II qualifiers.

A&M-Commerce Finishes Sixth at LSC Championships
A&M-Commerce closed out the 2012 Lone Star Conference Championships with a sixth-place showing at the conference meet, held on the track at Memorial Stadium on the A&M-Commerce campus May 3-5. The Lions finished with 57 points, two points better than seventh-place Incarnate Word, with seven season-best finishes and six placing among the top-five in their respective events.

Three School Records Fall in 2012
Some impressive performances were turned in by the women's track and field team as three school records fell in 2012. Senior Aysha Moultrie posted a time of 24.77 in the 200 meter as part of the heptathlon at the LSC Championships, setting both an A&M-Commerce school and LSC heptathlon record in the process. Both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams posted school-best times as well as the 4x100 ran a 47.10 at the Bobby Lane Invitational while the 4x400 relay team posted a 3:49.74 at the Lone Star Conference Championships, both of which were provisional qualifying times.

Hargraves Places Ninth at NCAA Division II Championships
Junior Whitney Hargraves closed out her impressive 2012 campaign with a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Championships in Pueblo, Colo., posting a mark of 5.77 meters, an inch and a half shy of placing eighth and earning All-America honors. Hargraves added to her impressive resume after earning All-Lone Star Conference honors after finishing second in both the long jump (5.94 meters) and triple jump (12.13 meters) as she finished with 10 top-five showings on the year, including three first-place finishes. Hargraves finished the year with four of the top five long jump marks and a pair of triple jump season-best marks for the Lions.

Leaupepe-Tele Takes Home LSC Title in Discus
Sophomore Abigail Leaupepe-Tele provided one of the most memorable moments of the year for the A&M-Commerce women's track and field teams, placing first in the discus at the LSC Championships and earning All-LSC honors in the process. Leaupepe-Tele posted a career-best mark of 45.18 meters, provisionally qualifying for nationals in the process. She finished the year with a pair of top-five season marks in the discus while holding the top-five distances in the shot put for A&M-Commerce. Leaupepe-Tele closed out the year with six top-five showings, including four first-place finishes.

Moultrie Makes Her Mark in Heptathlon
Senior Aysha Moultrie not only made her mark on the A&M-Commerce record book, but the Lone Star Conference's as well. Moultrie ran a school and conference record 24.77 at the LSC track meet en route to finishing third in the heptathlon with 4,884 points, good enough to qualify her for the 2012 NCAA Division II Meet in Pueblo, Colo. Moultrie proved to be one of the top all-around athletes on the roster, posting the top A&M-Commerce showings in the 200 meter dash, 800 meter run, high jump and javelin on the year while recording eight top-five showings.

Reed Makes Impressive Showing in A&M-Commerce Debut
Sophomore Angela Reed emerged as one of the Lions' top sprinters in 2012, recording the top four A&M-Commerce times in the 100 meter dash, including a provisional qualifying time of 11.95 at the Lone Star Conference Championships. Reed also was a key member of both the 4x100 meter relay team, including running the first leg on the school-record 47.10 showing at the Bobby Lane Invitational.

Jackson Remains Strong Among Lion Sprinters
Sophomore Vanessa Jackson had another strong showing for A&M-Commerce, providing some depth among the Lion sprinters in 2012. She notched a season-best time of 12.30 in the 100 meter at the Bobby Lane Invitational, followed by a 25.02 showing in the 200 meter and a 56.68 time in the 400 meter at the Texas State Bobcat Classic, all of which rank among the season-best in each event. Jackson also ran the anchor leg as both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams set school records in 2012 and was recognized as the A&M-Commerce Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Ross Posts Big Year in Throws for A&M-Commerce
Freshman Ashley Ross was another Lion that had an immediate presence as she posted the top marks in both the discus and hammer throw for A&M-Commerce in 2012. Ross had three of the top-five discus throws on the season, including a career-best 46.42 meters at the Mean Green Spring Invitational, which was also a provisional qualifying distance. She also notched the top-five hammer throw distances on the season, highlighted by a 40.14 meter hurl at the Michael Johnson Dr. Pepper Classic in Waco.
