Texas A&M-Commerce Begins Tournament with Two Victories

The Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team began the season with a 25-8, 25-11, 25-10 victory over Paul Quinn in the A&M-Commerce volleyball tournament on Friday night.

The Lions (1-0) started the year with 17 service aces - including five from sophomore Morgan Ballard and a .327 hitting percentage. A&M-Commerce held the Tigers to a -.193 hitting percentage.

Junior Alyssa Oberle recorded a game-high eight kills for the Lions and Terra Ousley and Ballard added five apiece.

After trailing 1-2 early in the first set, the Lions took a 3-2 advantage and never looked back. A&M-Commerce finished the game scoring the last eight points with the help of two kills from Ballard. Oberle tallied four kills in the second and third sets, leading the Lions to an early lead in both games.

Tanisha Joseph recorded three kills and Mia Brooks added two kills and a team-high six digs to lead the Lady Panthers.

A&M-Commerce won its second-straight match of the tournament defeating Southern Arkansas 25-17, 25-17, 25-10 in the final match of the first day.

Brittany Williams, Ousley and Lance each recorded five kills in the win. Faudoa contributed 17 assists and Williams also added 12 digs to the winning cause.

The Lions had six service aces and hit at a .225 clip for the victory and held Southern Arkansas to a -.034 hitting percentage.

Ballard had two kills and Lance added two aces as the Lions roared out to a 16-5 lead in the opening set. The Lady Muleriders made a push tightening the game at 21-17, but four-straight points and a kill by Williams sealed the opening game. In set two, the two teams were tied 11 times until a 9-1 spurt by A&M-Commerce closed out the set. The Lions never trailed in the third and final set with a 15-3 run to close out the contest.

The two-day tournament will conclude on Saturday with a 3 p.m. match up between A&M-Commerce and Southeastern Oklahoma State. Prior to the match, Southern Arkansas and SOSU will play at 10 a.m. and Southern Arkansas and Paul Quinn at 12:30 p.m.
