A&M-Commerce volleyball downs ACU, 3-1

Box Score vs. Abilene Christian
The Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team earned a
first set victory for the first time in 10 matches, and then went
on to defeat the Abilene Christian Wildcats, 25-23, 25-14, 18-25,
25-21, in Lone Star Conference action on Thursday night at the
A&M-Commerce Field House.
The Lions jump to 13-7 overall and 5-2 in LSC play, while the
Wildcats drop to 13-7 and 2-4 overall.
“We won game one," said Lions junior libero Lauren
Flynn. “That’s a step for us.”
Despite falling behind early in recent matches, A&M-Commerce
had bounced back to win eight, including four of its last five.
But, the Lions broke the streak on Thursday and edged the Wildcats
in set one with the help of four kills from Amy
Addison and two apiece from Alyssa
Oberle, Rachel Lance and Terra
Ousley.
“I’m very pleased that we were able to win game
one,” said Lions head volleyball coach Mark Pryor.
“That shows we are working on things that need to be
corrected.”
Addison recorded 15 kills and 13 assists. Oberle hit 12 kills,
Morgan Ballard chipped in 10, Perla
Faudoa collected 50 assists and Flynn added 27 digs to
pace the Lions.
A&M-Commerce rolled through the second set after opening on a
7-0 spurt. Abilene Christian would only get within five points the
rest of the set, as the Lions held the Wildcats to a .148 hitting
percentage.
ACU attempted a comeback with a seven-point win in the third set,
but the Lions rebounded in the fourth to snap a three-game losing
skid to the Wildcats. A&M-Commerce has now won 10 of its last
13 games.
“We have six matches left, but we have to win a couple more
to ensure that we qualify for the conference tournament,”
said Pryor.
With the 13 wins, the Lions are in the middle of their best season
since 2003, when the team won 15 matches.
Jennie Hutt led the Wildcats with a game-high 18 kills and 12
digs. Jordan Schilling tallied 12 kills and Michelle Bacon added 11
for ACU.
A&M-Commerce returns to the court on Friday with a 4 p.m.
matchup against Angelo State at the A&M-Commerce Field
House.
