Lions fall to Angelo State in four

Box Score vs. Angelo State

The Texas A&M University Commerce Lions took the early lead after winning the first set, but Angelo State bounced back to win the final three in a 23-25, 26-24, 25-15, 25-12 victory over the Lions on Friday night at the A&M-Commerce Field House.

Angelo State jumps to 16-11 for the season and 4-3 in Lone Star Conference action, while A&M-Commerce falls to 13-8 and 5-3.

“I am shocked at our team’s unwillingness to simply compete today,” said Lions head volleyball coach Mark Pryor.

Amy Addison collected a game-high 18 kills, including six in the first set to help the Lions take the 1-0 advantage. The Rambelles answered with 20 kills and a .348 hitting percentage in the second, edging the Lions by two. Angelo State leaped out to a 6-1 lead in the third, and expanded the advantage to nine before a kill by Kimber Duncan iced the set.

After neither team could stretch a lead to more the four in the final game, Duncan scored three of the Rambelles' final five points, helping the team close on a 4-1 spurt to take the set and the match.

Reigning LSC Co-Defensive Player of the Week Lauren Flynn recorded 36 digs and averaged nine digs per set to pace A&M-Commerce. Terra Ousley and Morgan Ballard each contributed 12 kills for the Lions and Perla Faudoa finished with 48 assists and 14 digs. Ousley closed with a game-high .611 hitting percentage.

“For our team to get better, we cannot depend on Lauren Flynn to average nine digs per set,” said Pryor. “We have to have a commitment to playing with passion and urgency in the back row. Flynn has repeatedly done her part, it’s time for other teammates to do theirs.”

Three players tallied double-doubles for the Rambelles, including Duncan who finished with 16 kills and 12 digs. Adrenne Taylor chipped in 10 kills and 12 digs and Shelbi Chipman added 10 kills and 11 digs. Alaina Sivells joined in double-digit kills with 15.

A&M-Commerce will return to action on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Texas Woman’s in the final match of the current three-game homestand.
