Texas A&M-Commerce's Flynn, Faudoa earn awards for play at Bearcat Challenge

The Lone Star Conference announced Tuesday that Texas A&M University-Commerce junior libero Lauren Flynn earned Lone Star Conference Co-Defensive Player of Week honors after her performance in the SBU Bearcat Challenge Tournament last weekend in Bolivar, Mo.

“It’s nice to see the LSC taking notice of her individual achievements last weekend,” said Lions head volleyball coach Mark Pryor.

Flynn made it hard not to notice her play as she totaled 104 digs in four matches against Wayne State, Missouri S&T, Southwest Baptist and Rockhurst. She opened the tourney with a season-high 36-dig performance against undefeated Wayne State and followed with a 22-dig effort in the Lions’ 3-1 win over Missouri S&T. Flynn added 46 digs over the final two matches for an average of 26 per match.

The Deer Park, Texas native’s 6.93 digs per set throughout the tourney helped lift her to the top of the LSC with 5.38 digs per set.

Flynn has accumulated 129 digs for the season and now has 1,395 for her career, which moved her into second all-time in the A&M-Commerce record books. She needs 249 more to take over the top spot.

“She is well on her way to becoming the A&M-Commerce record-holder in digs and has the opportunity to put it out of reach for a long, long time,” said Pryor.

Lions’ setter Perla Faudoa made news as well after being named to the SBU Bearcat Challenge all-tournament team.

“She did a great job of putting hitters in the right position at the right time,” said Pryor. “We are very pleased with her play, her level of energy, and her leadership.”

Faudoa tallied 139 assists, 38 digs, 13 kills and two blocks for A&M-Commerce in the two-day tournament. Wayne State’s Jennifer Hefner (MVP) and Danielle Wessel, Rockhurst’s Maggie McGovern, Arkansas Tech’s Racheal Urquhart and Brennae Benda and SBU’s Kinsey Palmer and Ashley Jurgensmeyer joined her on the all-tournament team.
