Winning Streak Reaches 10 for A&M-Commerce Volleyball
The Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team won its 10th-straight match on Saturday afternoon with a 25-23, 16-25, 25-18, 33-31 win over host Tarleton State in Stephenville, Texas.
A&M-Commerce (14-3, 2-0 LSC) junior Naomi Mays paced a balanced attack with 24 kills, hitting at a .340 clip. Senior Amy Addison added 11 kills, senior Perla Faudoa had a season-high 51 assists - two shy of a career-high - and senior Lauren Flynn had 23 digs. Freshman Ashleigh Barnett and Faudoa added 13 and 10 digs, respectively.
Tarleton State (5-10, 1-1 LSC) had four players with double digit kills including a team-high 19 from Shay Gracy. The attack by TexAnns hit at a .227 clip, including at a .515 percent during the second set.
In the win, the Lions had five service aces and took advantage of six service errors by Tarleton State.
With the opening set tied at 21, kills by Mays and junior Terra Ousley and a service ace by freshman Rachel Robertson put the Lions up by three. Tarleton came back to score the next two points but another kill by Mays gave the Lions the initial set for the fifth match in a row.
Tarleton led from start-to-finish in the second set and capitalized on a Lions attack that had seven hitting errors.
In the third set after the two teams were tied at 3-3, A&M-Commerce scored nine of the next 12 points to take a 12-6 lead. In the run, Mays added two more kills; a kill from freshman Morgan Moeller and a TSU attack error prompted a TexAnn timeout. The Lions held onto the lead for the remainder of the set and win it by a 25-18 margin.
During the fourth set, the Lions rallied from a 17-12 deficit with a 6-1 margin to tie the contest at 18. After the two teams were tied at 18, Mays came up with four kills and Moeller and Addison each added two more to spark the attack for A&M-Commerce in a 33-31 victory.
The streak is the longest since the Lions' 1988 squad reached the NCAA South Central Regional finals where they won 11 in a row to start the season.
A&M-Commerce will seek to
continue its winning ways on Thursday when they host
nationally-ranked West Texas A&M at 7 pm.
