A&M-Commerce Volleyball Recognized by the AVCA

The Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team was selected for recognition on Wednesday for the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2009-2010 season.

The award honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. A&M-Commerce is just one of 55 NCAA Division II programs to earn the annual honor.

“I am very proud of the women’s volleyball team and their commitment to excellence in the classroom. The vision for A&M-Commerce athletics is to strive to be nationally recognized for excellence in academic and athletic performance. This award is a true indication of the dedication and hard work these young ladies make daily not only on the volleyball court but in the classroom,” said athletic director Carlton Cooper.

Head Coach Craig Case, who will begin his first season in the fall, is pleased to receive the annual award. “This is another indication that our program is on the right track. We have a group of student athletes who are committed to being successful in all aspects of life, not just on the court. We hope to continue academic excellence this year and start to build a tradition of on-court, off-court, and classroom excellence.”

The Lions will open the 2010 season at home at the Field House when they host Southern Arkansas on Friday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m.
