SAN ANGELO, Texas – A&M-Commerce's men's cross country team notched a third-place finish at the 2011 Lone Star Conference Championships in San Angelo Saturday, while the women finished ninth. The third-place showing for the men is tied for the best Lion performance at the conference meet.
Isaac Chelimo was the top A&M-Commerce finisher on the men's side, placing 14th with a time of 26:20, edging out teammate Everett Wilder by one second (26:21). Because of their top-15 finishes, both Chelimo and Wilder were named All-Lone Star Conference.
A pack of Lions just missed top-20 finishes as Alex Kimp finished 22nd (26:40), Raymond Mata placed 23rd (26:42) and Fredrick Kipsang checked in at 25th (26:46). Ross Hicks placed 35th for A&M-Commerce (27:20) .
Eastern New Mexico captured the men's title, the first in their program's history, recording five top-10 finishers and notching 28 total points, easily defeating runner-up Abilene Christian (68 points). Joining the Lions in the top-five were host Angelo State (143 points) and West Texas A&M (149 points).
On the women's side, Brooke Farris was the top A&M-Commerce finisher, checking in at 37th with a time of 24:29. Audrie Vela was the second Lion to finish, placing 51st (25:09), followed by Jennifer Speer (25:23), Caroline Cotsakis (26:03) and Kendall Christmas (26:52).
With the conference meet behind them, the Lions now turn their attention to the postseason. The 2011 NCAA South Central Regional will be hosted by Midwestern State and will take place Saturday, November 5 in Wichita Falls.
