WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- The 2011 A&M-Commerce cross country season wrapped up at the 2011 NCAA South Central Regional Championships Saturday as the Lion men placed 14th out of 19 schools. The women only had four runners competing meaning they were unable to tally a team score.
The men placed 14th, tallying 369 points for the meet and were led by Isaac Chelimo's 51st-place showing with a time of 33:21.60 over the 10k course. Everett Wilder, who joined Chelimo as an All-Lone Star Conference runner, was the second A&M-Commerce competitor to cross the finish line, placing 88th with a time of 34:20.40.
Raymond Mata was the third Lion to finish, posting a time of 34:31.40 and edging out teammate Fredrick Kipsang (34:35.40) by four seconds. Alex Kimp (34:37.50) and Ross Hicks (34:40.80) all finished among the individual top-100, with Tyler Hemenway (35:16.00) rounding out the A&M-Commerce competitors.
On the women's side, Brooke Farris was the first Lion to finish, placing 117th with a time of 24:50.70 over the 6k course, competing in her first NCAA Regional. She edged out teammate Jennifer Speer (25:08.20), who placed 125th. Caroline Cotsakis (25:44.10) and Kendall Christmas (26:14.20) closed out the four Lion women who competed.
A&M-Commerce now turns its sights towards the future as neither the men's or the women's team has a senior on its roster. Head coach Darren Schneider knew the youth of his team would be a factor on the year, and he's hoping the experience gained by this year's squad will help lead to improved results moving forward.
